Our Story
New Moon Lodge is owned and operated by Rockford Moen with his wife Kathy. His elder brother Dwight as well as sister-in-law Donna are now partially retired but are still a part of the resort and continue to help with its operations. Rockford and Dwight have been running the resort since their parents, founders Lloyd and Patsy Moen, retired in the late 1980’s. The heart of New Moon Lodge is in providing excellent service and warm hospitality. We like for people to feel that our little island is a place where they can feel at home. With now three generations involved in the operation of the resort, we have always found that our best advertisement is the experiences had by our guests which they share with others, so we take great focus on guest experience. From the moment you arrive at our dock, you are among friends and family. So from all of the Moens and our dedicated staff,
welcome to New Moon Lodge.
Welcome home
Our History
New Moon Lodge began as the dream of a young pair of newlyweds. Lloyd and Patsy Moen made the leap in 1955 and, with most of their finances, purchased an undeveloped island on Lake of the Woods for five hundred and fifty dollars. They immediately went to work building a small cabin in which to sleep while they built the lodge, working with little more than hand saws and hammers. Welcoming their first guest in 1957, they began a legacy that lasts to this day.
The resort grew exponentially in the following years, expanding from a single two bed cabin to the seven cabins we have today. The main lodge was enlarged first with the dining room, then our lounge. Our fleet of boats were designed and engineered by Lloyd and built by him with Dwight and Rockford in the 1980’s over the course of several years. The work to improve never ended and continues to be a driving force in our philosophy.
Every year we send our guests a newsletter, reporting on the happenings of our past year; the fish that were caught, the memories made and family news. These newsletters are the most in depth description of our history and are available to read here.
A Family Tradition of Cooks
Patsy claims that she learned how to cook through the necessity of feeding the guests that began to arrive so many years ago. Beginning with a simple knowledge of cooking, she learned as she went, discovering her talents. Patsy established a reputation for preparing excellent food, with each menu crafted with the same care she puts in to feeding her family. She passed this knowledge on to Donna, to take care of the next generation of guests, and is enjoying her retirement in Morson, leaving the lodge in good hands.
Donna began working at New Moon Lodge as a server in 1978 and married Dwight one year later, becoming a part of the Moen family. In 1989, Patsy Moen handed over the reigns and Donna became our cook. With 30 years of experience, Donna made sure that guests were met with hearty, satisfying meals during their stay. Now partially retired, she has passed the keys to the kitchen to her niece Kristin to continue the family tradition of cooking for the Lodge.

"The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope."
